Jeff Hutchison

TAWAS CITY – Tawas Area Schools Superintendent Jeff Hutchison has tendered his resignation.

Hutchison has accepted a job at Iosco Regional Educational Service Agency (Iosco RESA) as its special education director. His resignation is effective as of Aug. 31.

He has worked at Tawas Area Schools for the past 22 years in a variety of capacities including teacher, special education director, building principal and superintendent. He was hired by the school board as superintendent in July 2014.

In a July 30 letter to Anne Freel, Tawas Area Schools Board of Education president, Hutchison wrote, “I have been employed by Tawas Area Schools for twenty-two years. During this time, I have been fortunate to serve the district in a variety of roles including coach, teacher, special education director, principal, and superintendent.

“While at Tawas I have had the pleasure to work with amazing kids and alongside of and for countless outstanding educators, administrators, and people. Professionally, Tawas Area Schools have provided me knowledge, opportunities, and experiences that I will be forever thankful for.

“My experience as superintendent over the past 5 years has been challenging but it has also been the most rewarding experience of my career. I am especially thankful and proud to have worked with the Board and staff during a time in which we were able to pass a bond that allowed us to upgrade the district’s facilities, improve security, raise student achievement, and increase teacher and student access to curriculum and technology.

“Regardless of my title I have always been extremely thankful and proud to be a part of this incredible district. That being said, I am ready for a change and I will be leaving the district to pursue other professional opportunities. This letter will serve as official notice of my resignation as superintendent of Tawas Area Schools effective August 31, 2019, pending my successful hire at Iosco RESA scheduled for Aug. 14, 2019. During my remaining weeks, I will work to facilitate a successful transition while the Board selects the next superintendent of this great district.”

How the school boards voted and how Tawas Area Schools will proceed will be reported in next week’s edition.

Prior to accepting the position at Tawas Area Schools superintendent, Hutchison served as Clara Bolen Elementary principal since 2009. He previously was principal at the former Tawas City Elementary during the 2008-09 school year and has served as the district’s director of federal programs since 2006 and as its director of special education from 2002-08.

He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in secondary education from Central Michigan University in 1990, a Master of Arts degree in educational leadership from Saginaw Valley State University (SVSU) in 2002 and his Specialist in Educational Leadership from SVSU in 2005.

Hutchison began his educational career as a special educational teacher with Oscoda Area Schools during the 1991-92 school year. He served in the same capacity at Hillman Community Schools from 1992-94, Alpena Public Schools in the fall of 1994, Oscoda Area Schools from 1994-97 and Tawas Area Schools from 1997-2002.
