Freedom Week, Summerfest unveiled by John Morris EAST TAWAS - Plans were unveiled Monday for nine days of summer activities and festivals in the Tawases beginning on Independence Day.
Organizers for Freedom Week and Tawas Bay Summerfest met Monday night with the East Tawas and Tawas City councils to give an update on their progress.
Freedom Week will follow the Tawas Area Chamber of Commerce’s parade and fireworks display on July 4. Events will be held in East Tawas and in Tawas City.
According to Farah Rose Eagal, planned Freedom Week events include sidewalk sales on July 5, a “Chicken Throwdown” contest to see who can make the best barbecue chicken on July 6 at Tawas City Park, Kite Day along the Tawas Bay waterfront in East Tawas on July 7, a motorcycle show and street dance on July 8 in East Tawas, a church band and making shoeboxes full of goodies for military personnel serving overseas on July 9 in Tawas City, Holistic Day and a teen beach bash on July 10 in East Tawas.
Summerfest returns to the Tawases July 11-13. Jerry Malone, who is cochairing the event with Gene Kirvan, said many of the activities from the former Marinerfest will be brought back for this year’s festival in the sister cities.
The Mayor’s Fish Boil returns to Tawas City Park on July 11. Also planned are performances by Tawas Bay Players Singers and the Tawas Sound Waves jazz band. A lighted boat parade from Gateway Park to the East Tawas State Dock will be held after dark on July 11 and a bikini contest will be held in local taverns.
Amusement rides are planned for Gateway Park in Tawas City July 11-12.
Other activities on July 12 include the second annual Kiwanis 5-kilometer Run by the Bay in East Tawas, sand castle building contests and volleyball tournament in East Tawas and Tawas City, kids bike and pet parade in East Tawas, “Paws in the Park” at Harbor Park in East Tawas, a concert by “Wild Hair,” wine and cheese tasting and bikini contest finals at Tawas City Park, a car cruise through the Tawases and a street dance along Newman Street in downtown East Tawas.
Summerfest will wrap up on July 13 with a pancake breakfast at the Tawas Moose Lodge in Tawas City, a car show in East Tawas and the volleyball tournament finals at Tawas City Park.
Malone said volunteers are welcome to help out with events and groups that are holding activities during Summerfest should give him at call at 362-8517 to be put on the festival’s calendar of events.
