Tawas Bay Waves 10-U team takes second in Summer Sizzler

EAST TAWAS - The Tawas Bay Waves 10 and under team compiled a 3-3 record to finish second in the 10-U Division of the fifth annual Tawas Summer Sizzler fast-pitch softball tournament, held June 21-22 at Dewey Durant Park in East Tawas.

The tournament, sponsored by the Tawas Bay Tourist and Convention Bureau, the Days Inn of Tawas and the Tawas Youth Amateur Softball Association, drew 20 teams from Tawas and around Michigan in four different age divisions.
Teams in the 10-U division were from Tawas, Fenton and Auburn. The 12-U division saw teams participating from Tawas, Onaway, Fenton, Reese, Durand and the MBS Jets from the Midland/Bay City/Saginaw area. The 14-U division was made up of teams from Tawas, Alma Fenton, West Branch, Oxford and the MBS Jets. Teams from Bay City, Sterling Heights, Fenton, Essexville and Marquette made up the 16-U division.

Teams in all divisions played pool play on Saturday, June 21, and then were seeded into a single elimination tournament on Sunday, June 22, to determine the tournament champions.

In the 10-U division pool play, it was Tawas over Auburn, 15-3; Fenton over Auburn, 16-2, and Fenton over Tawas, 8-3. Following pool play, teams were seeded into a single elimination semifinal round to determine the seeding for the tournament championship. In the semifinal round, it was Tawas over Auburn, 14-2, and Fenton over Tawas, 11-2. In the tournament championship round, it was Tawas defeating Auburn and Fenton edging Tawas in the final inning to claim championship honors.

In 12-U division pool play, it was Moran Ironworks from Onaway over Tawas, 13-8; Reese over Fenton, 12-4; the MBS Jets over Moran Ironworks, 5-0; Reese over Durand, 9-4; the MBS Jets over Tawas, 5-1, and Fenton over Durand, 9-1. In the championship round, it was Moran Ironworks over Durand, 11-0; Tawas over Fenton, 12-8; Moran over Reese, 13-3, and the MBS Jets over Tawas, 11-3. In the tournament championship, it was the MBS Jets over Moran Ironworks, 3-2, to claim the trophy.

In 14-U division pool play, it was Tawas 9, Alma 3; Fenton 5, Ogemaw Outlaws 3; the MBS Jets over the Alma Angels, 11-1; the Michigan Hawks, 14-0, over Ogemaw; the MBS Jets over Tawas, 7-2, and the Michigan Hawks over Fenton, 10-7. In the championship round, it was Ogemaw over Tawas on a tie breaker; Fenton over Alma, 9-0; the Michigan Hawks over Ogemaw, 9-0; the Jets over Fenton on a tie breaker, and, in the championship game, it was the MBS Jets over the Michigan Hawks by the score of 4-1.

In 16-U division pool play, it was the Tri City Attack over Essexville, 9-1; the Stingrays over the Marquette Frost, 3-0; Fenton over Tri City, 2-1; Essexville over the Stingrays, 8-0, and Fenton over Marquette, 7-0. In the championship round, Marquette advanced by defeating Essexville, it was the Tri City Attack over the Stingrays, Marquette downed Fenton and, in the tournament championship game, it was Tri City over the Marquette Frost by the score of 7-2.



“This was the fifth year for the tournament and, with gas prices and the economy the way they are, we weren’t sure if we would get a good turnout of teams,” said Tournament Director Keith Frank. “But three of the four divisions were full by March and all teams expressed an interest in returning next year.”
