Tawas Youth Wrestling Club competed in first 2009 meet

EAST LANSING - The Tawas Youth Wrestling Club kicked off its 2009 wrestling season by traveling to Jenison Fieldhouse on the campus of Michigan State University.

That’s where the Michigan Youth Wrestling Association (MYWA) held its annual “Super Bowl of Youth Wrestling” with a record turnout of 914 wrestlers from across the state and from as far away as Harvey, Ill., located near Chicago.
Four wrestlers from the Tawas club finished as high as fourth place, all recording wins in the first round of wrestling.

Lukas Herrick, age 4, wrestling in the 5- and 6-year-old division at 58 pounds, won a fourth place bronze medal for his efforts.

Samuel Weiss, age 5, also wrestling in the 5- and 6-year-old division at the 43-pound weight class, took home a fifth place medal, winning the very first match he wrestled by a score of 25-12 and recording the team’s quickest pin in an astonishing nine seconds.

Scott Kobel, wrestling in the 7- and 8-year-old division at 55 pounds, recorded two pins in his effort to place sixth.

The last of the Tawas youth wrestlers attending the meet was Jeff Ross, wrestling in the 11- and 12-year-old division at 112 pounds.Ross won two of his matches after having lost to the eventual champion, Trainor Shonquise of Lansing, thus securing a fifth place medal.

The Tawas Youth Wrestling Club will next travel to Chippewa Hills High School in Remus on Saturday, Jan. 11.
