EAST TAWAS – City officials in East Tawas have received a petition asking to create a special assessment district bordering Tawas Lake for aquatic weed control.
However, some members of the city council at Monday’s meeting want more information before a proposed special assessment resolution is voted on. It was the consensus of the council Monday to postpone acting on the proposed resolution until the Oct. 15 meeting.
Ron Leslie, East Tawas city manager, told the council the city’s special assessment ordinance requires “that the petition be signed by property owners whose aggregate property in the proposed district was assessed for not less than 60 percent of the total assessed value of the privately-owned real estate located within the proposed special assessment district.
“Assessor Rhonda Sells has determined that the petitions have been signed by property owners owning 68.32 percent of the aggregate privately-owned properties,” Leslie said.
