EAST TAWAS – A small crowd of about 25 people gathered at Jerry’s Marina on Tawas Point Friday afternoon for the launching of Heritage 23 on her maiden voyage.
Heritage 23 is a replica of the historic Mackinaw boat. The nearly completed 23-foot boat is being built by members of Heritage Coast Sailing and Rowing, a new non-profit community volunteer corporation.
Boat designer Richard Franklin Pierce, from Franklin-Eldridge Boatbuilders in Windemere, England, and boat kit designer Alec Jordan of Jordan Boats, Fife, Scotland, were on hand for the launch. Jordan joined Pierce in the first row of Heritage 23.
“This is a very exciting day indeed,” Pierce said. “The boat performed magnificently and looks very nice in the water. Now on to rigging it for sails.”
