GRANT Twp. – Rachael Kristine Bruno, 42, East Tawas, was injured while driving a motorcycle on the afternoon of July 23 in Grant Township.

The Iosco County Sheriff’s Office reports that Bruno was taken by ambulance to Ascension St. Joseph Hospital in Tawas City, and was later airlifted to a trauma center for non life-threatening serious injuries.

The incident occurred on Saginaw Street, near Cayuga Trail, and authorities advise that neither drugs nor alcohol are believed to be contributing factors. The investigation also revealed that Bruno hadn’t used the cell phone which was attached to the handlebars of the motorcycle for some time prior, thus indicating that this was not a factor in the crash, either.

According to the sheriff’s office, Bruno was traveling east on Saginaw Street, following behind her husband’s motorcycle.

He reported to police that he rounded the corner and looked in his mirror to see his wife overturning on her motorcycle at the curve. He added that he did not know what caused the crash.

The sheriff’s office says that Bruno was unconscious for an unknown time and, when responders arrived, she was able to open her eyes but was unresponsive.

Authorities note that an inspection of the bike revealed it was in first gear at the time. When lifted, the motorcycle was functional and drove as it should, including having working brakes.

Sheriff’s office personnel say that the incident appears to have occurred by Bruno failing to negotiate the 90-degree curve in the roadway.

Bruno, who was ejected from the machine, was wearing a helmet when the collision took place.
