EAST TAWAS – Dohnovan Xzavier-Lloyd Newcome, 16, Oscoda, passed away recently when he was struck by a vehicle in East Tawas.

The investigation into the crash is still ongoing and active. Therefore, as of press time, the name of the driver of the involved vehicle could not officially be released. For now, he has been identified only as a 62-year-old male from East Tawas.

Additional details will be made available once the investigation is complete, and a decision has been made by the prosecuting attorney.

According to those from the Michigan State Police (MSP) West Branch Post, troopers were dispatched to a personal injury crash at the intersection of US-23 and Tawas Beach Road, at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Aug. 31.

Preliminary investigation indicates that Newcome, an Oscoda High School student, was riding his bicycle on the sidewalk.  

As he was crossing the roadway, in the crosswalk, a northbound 2019 Dodge Ram pickup truck, driven by the 62-year-old East Tawas resident, turned right onto Tawas Beach Road and struck the cyclist. Newcome was pronounced dead on scene.

According to the MSP, troopers were assisted on the scene by the East Tawas Fire Department and the Iosco County Sheriff’s Office.
