PLAINFIELD Twp. – Troopers from the Michigan State Police (MSP) West Branch Post, at approximately 6:19 p.m. on Saturday, were dispatched to off-road vehicle (ORV) Trail 649 – about ½-mile southeast of Esmond Road in Plainfield Township – for a one-vehicle ORV injury crash.

While riding with family members, police say that Allen Wayne Niederquell, 56, Oscoda, was driving southeast on the trail, on a 2008 Yamaha Raptor 700.

Investigation thus far indicates that Niederquell was traveling at a high rate of speed when he lost control of his four-wheeler, ran off the trail to the left and collided with a tree. He sustained extensive injuries from the crash.

Life-saving measures were attempted by officers on scene, but Niederquell – who was wearing a helmet at the time – succumbed to his injuries.

Authorities note that alcohol is not believed to be a factor in the crash, and that the incident remains under investigation.

The MSP was assisted at the scene by Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers, members of the Plainfield Township Fire Department and Iosco County EMS personnel.
