It's no secret: flu season is nearly here.

That's why Macomb County Health Department will be offering residents the chance to get their flu vaccine for this year at two drive-thru immunization clinics.

The clinics will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, October 17 and Saturday, October 24 in the parking lot of the former Macomb County Juvenile Court Building, located at 380 North Rose in Mount Clemens.

The two Saturday dates are being held to provide greater access to flu immunizations for Macomb County residents, likely due to the fact that Saturday is the weekend.

The two Saturdays are being held in conjunction with the Health Department's regularly scheduled drive-thru flu immunizations.

Those are being held from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the same location and at the same time on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 25401 Harper Avenue in St. Clair Shores.

“Obtaining an annual seasonal flu vaccine is the best way to help protect you and your family against flu, and reducing the risk of flu illness," William Ridella, the Health Department's director and health officer, said.

"These newly-announced Saturday clinics are being offered to help improve community access and help ensure that everyone has an opportunity to receive this important vaccination,” he said.

Vaccines are $20 for adults and can only be paid by credit card on-site at the drive-thru event, with no debit cards or Health Savings Account (HSA) accounts accepted.

Children under the age of 19 years who do not have insurance coverage or whose insurance does not cover the cost of the flu vaccine can enroll in the Vaccines for Children Program and obtain the flu vaccine for $10.

A parent or guardian must be present for each child who receives a vaccine, but no infants 6 months or younger will be vaccinated.

Insurance is accepted for both children and adults by calling the Mount Clemens Health Department office at (586) 469-5372.

Registration is required for both events, and can be made by calling the Mount Clemens office or the St. Clair Shores office at (586) 465-8537.

A form must also be filled out, one for adults and one for children, and a notice of Macomb County's privacy practices will be given to each participant.

For more information, call the Health Department's Flu Hotline at (586) 466-7923.
