OSCODA – Members of the Oscoda-AuSable Chamber of Commerce (OACC) Board unanimously voted to cancel the annual Northern Lights Parade, which was set to commence on Saturday, Dec. 5.

According to Board Member Sheila Malewska, the decision to cancel the parade was due to the recent executive order administered by the Michigan Department of Health & Human Services (MDHHS) and the safety of the community.

“Safety of our community is paramount,” said Malewska.

The order administered by the MDHHS on Nov. 15, includes closing a variety of businesses in order to slow the spread of COVID-19 including bars, colleges, high schools, casinos, movie theaters and gyms for group exercise classes. Additionally, it limits outdoor gatherings to 25 people.

With the cancellation of the December parade, Malewska said the board discussed the possibility of other ideas such as a parade in February with a love theme or around St. Patrick’s Day with a luck theme.
