OSCODA – Oscoda’s annual Summer Concert series is set to kick off Thursday, June 27 at the Oscoda Beach Park.
The concerts are hosted and organized by the Oscoda Rotary Club and will be held at the Oscoda Bandshell located at the park, beginning at 7 p.m.
Eight bands are set to play throughout this summer. The first of which will be The Victory Trio on June 27. Each concert lasts around an hour, according to organizers.
The bands that perform do not charge the Rotary, each musical group performs for free. However, during a concert break a member of the Rotary will go through the crowd with a bucket and collect donations for the groups.
Rotary President Mary Reitler said each year they hold concessions where they sell pop, popcorn, bottled water, and depending on the weather snow cones.
Reitler said she encourages people to bring chairs and blankets.
“A lot of people bring their KFC dinner and sit and talk to their neighbors. There isn’t a better setting. The backdrop is Lake Huron, with a beautiful sky directly behind. It’s the best beach in Michigan. It’s an overall relaxing event. Kids can play on the playground, it’s just a nice family event,” she said.
Reitler said the concerts began as an idea created by the late MaryAnn Bartels.
“At the time MaryAnn Bartels was the choir teacher and she had put on a fabulous play. Just a remarkable woman she was,” Reitler said. “She said we need music down here. So she contacted bands and the Rotary Club started concessions. Everything slowly came together. She left quite a legacy.”
Reitler said every year they try to have a variety of bands. This year features a lot of regulars but Reitler said they are always on the lookout for new bands to perform
