OSCODA – An act of nature has been cited as the cause of a garage fire in Oscoda Township, which broke out just after 10 p.m. on May 31.

There were no injuries as a result of the blaze, which occurred at 7945 E. Cedar Lake Rd.

According to the Oscoda Township Fire Department (OTFD), the incident was due to the lightning strike of a tree near the structure. It affected the electrical service, feeding back to the garage and igniting a portion of the garage, which is detached from the adjacent home.

The OTFD utilized approximately 750 gallons of water/foam to extinguish the flames, and spent about an hour on site before determining the scene to be safe.

While the contents inside the enclosed garage were not burned, they were exposed to smoke damage.

As noted by the OTFD, the pre-incident value of the property was estimated to be $68,000, with the contents valued at $25,000. The estimated property loss was reported to be about $22,000, and the content loss $12,000.
