WILDLIFE CROSSING

Steve Hasler, National City, snapped this photograph from his house on the south end of Big Island Lake last month of migrating American mergansers.  “The mergansers show up shortly after the ice melts and stay around about two weeks before moving on”  Hasler said.

MUSIC SCHOLARSHIPS

Tawas Community Concert Band (TCCB) presented student scholarships totaling $2,000 to 12 area high school students at its spring concert on April 22. Six of the students attend Tawas Area Schools, four attend Oscoda Area Schools and two are enrolled in the AuGres-Sims school district. Eleven of the students will attend the Herter Band Camp this summer. The remaining student, Haley Skarin, will attend the Alma College Percussion Workshop. She is a percussionist with the TCCB and recently participated with the All State Concert Band in the Devos Center in Grand Rapids. Funds to support these scholarships are generated by donations that are received at the concert band’s performances. Pictured above, from left, are Colleen Kubisiak, Tawas Area; Juliette Johnson, Tawas Area; Haley Skarin, Tawas Area; Margaret Thibault, Oscoda Schools; Alyssa Reker, Oscoda Schools; Colbie Kruse, Oscoda Schools; Megan Wood, Tawas Area; McKenzie Nunn, Tawas Area; Gabrielle Whetstone-Johnson, Tawas Area; and Avery Lopez, Oscoda Schools. Not pictured are Bryce Verdusco and Mary Czarnik of AuGres-Sims.

FALSE ALARM

The Iosco County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) drone captured this image on the afternoon of April 26, after a passerby reported a suspicious object floating off the shore of Lake Huron in Tawas City. Captain Scott Frank, Iosco County jail administrator, said the man who reported the incident thought it may have been an overturned boat. Frank, who is the ICSO drone operator, and Deputy Matthew Klosowski first used binoculars to view the object and, while it was not clear what it was, they said there were no obvious signs of distress surrounding the item. Frank and Klosowski then deployed the drone, while assisting each other as the drone pilot in command and visual observer. The item was identified as a large mass of weeds, including the root system, and mud which were floating with the current. They advised that the mass was just over 5,000 feet into the bay, approximately one mile out.
