Steve Hasler, National City, snapped this photograph from his house on the south end of Big Island Lake last month of migrating American mergansers. “The mergansers show up shortly after the ice melts and stay around about two weeks before moving on” Hasler said.

The Iosco County Sheriff’s Office (ICSO) drone captured this image on the afternoon of April 26, after a passerby reported a suspicious object floating off the shore of Lake Huron in Tawas City. Captain Scott Frank, Iosco County jail administrator, said the man who reported the incident thought it may have been an overturned boat. Frank, who is the ICSO drone operator, and Deputy Matthew Klosowski first used binoculars to view the object and, while it was not clear what it was, they said there were no obvious signs of distress surrounding the item. Frank and Klosowski then deployed the drone, while assisting each other as the drone pilot in command and visual observer. The item was identified as a large mass of weeds, including the root system, and mud which were floating with the current. They advised that the mass was just over 5,000 feet into the bay, approximately one mile out.
