TAWAS CITY – Tawas Area senior Gabe Martin put the finishing touches on his stellar high school golf career over the weekend.

Martin competed in the Division 3 state finals on Friday and Saturday at Katke Golf Course at Ferris State University. He shot a score of 78 on Friday and an 83 on Saturday, giving him a two-day total of 161, good for 17th place.

“I thought Gabe played very well, he was really composed and struck the ball well,” head coach Keith Martin said. “We’ve only had four or five kids ever finish in the top-20 individually, so it was an excellent accomplishment.”

Martin had to play through vastly different conditions on the two days.

“Friday’s round he hit the ball great, but had a hard time adjusting to the greens, they were big and fast and just not something we had seen with the cold wet spring,” Martin said. “Day two, the wind really picked up and most of the scores went up.  Gabe hit the ball well, putted the greens a little better but the conditions were tougher.

He was hovering around the top-10 all day, but one bad swing at the wrong time cost him a triple bogey on his second to last hole, dropping him to 17th. Still, a very good performance and something he can be proud of going forward in his post-high school playing career at Delta.”
