Oscoda’s Alec Apsitis blasts off a shot during last week’s home win over Sault Ste Marie.

OSCODA – Oscoda was able to secure a key North Star League soccer win Wednesday night. The Owls made the trip north to Alcona, where they defeated the Tigers 5-2, moving them to just a game away from clinching the league title.

The Owls got a goal midway through the opening half on a goal by Aiden Backstrom, as he took a nice pass from John Heisner and booted the ball in.

The Tigers netted a goal in the 33rd minute, but Oscoda hit back for a pair of goals in the final four minutes of the half, getting a pair of tallies form Michael Wrona. Backstrom assisted on his first goal, with Michael Stepp assist on the second, making it 3-1 at the half.

Oscoda pushed ahead 5-1 on goals by Andrew Benton and Backstrom. Benton scored his goal after Hunter Gerow cleared a ball out his way and Backstrom was aided by a pass by Stepp just 30 seconds after Benton’s goal.

The Tigers netted their final goal with about six minuets left to play.
