OSCODA – The third annual Shore Fun Beach Run/Walk fundraiser will be returning to Oscoda Township on Saturday, June 22.

Proceeds raised during the event will benefit the nonprofit group HealthQuest, the mission of which, representatives say, is to inspire and educate the community to thrive and live healthy, happy, balanced and energetic lives.

Member Jeff Gottlieb states that the 5K run/walk will begin at Oscoda Beach Park and follow the sandy shoreline of Lake Huron. “This is one of the few run/walks in the entire state of Michigan to be held entirely on the sand.”

Along with the 5K event, Gottlieb says that a one-mile children’s run/walk will also be held.

The 5K run/walk will begin at 11 a.m., while the children’s event is set to take place at noon.

Advance registration is encouraged, but participants can also sign up the day of the event, beginning at 10 a.m. in the bandshell of Oscoda Beach Park. The venue is located on East River Road, just off of US-23 in downtown Oscoda.

Participants are asked to arrive at least 30 minutes before their event time, to allow for registration and packet pickup.

Organizers state that there will be yoga and stretching demonstrations held before the events, if runners would like to arrive earlier.

“As this is a fun event that encourages both runners and walkers to enjoy the beach, all ages and fitness levels are encouraged to participate,” Gottlieb notes.

He shared that local sponsors of the event include Harrisville Eye Care, AuSable Hardware, Ray’s Gym, Rotary Club of Oscoda, Heritage House Realty, Kalitta Air, Expressions of Health, Sunrise Coast Yoga, Spriggles Motivational Books for Children, Family Fare, Salon 121 and Roger’s Family Foods.

For those who register prior to June 22, the 5K run/walk will cost $25, and the one-mile children’s event will be $9. If signing up the day of, the run/walk fee will be $30 and the children’s event fee will be $10.

Organizers point out that the run is an incredible event for the entire family, and that awards will be presented as soon as the last participant completes the event.

Prizes will be given to the top male and top female in each age group, as well as the top male and top female overall. All one-mile participants will receive a medal.

Registrants are reminded that, as a beach run, this may involve running in the water and uneven sand at times. Participants are asked to wear shoes that they don’t mind getting wet or dirty.

To help registration run smoothly, it is being requested that event goers bring a photo ID and pre-signed waiver to the park.

The activity is co-presented by the Oscoda-AuSable Chamber of Commerce, which will be hosting its 36th annual Art on the Beach event in conjunction with the run.

Art on the Beach – which will feature more than 100 vendors from across the country –  is slated for Saturday and Sunday, June 22-23, at Oscoda Beach Park. Further details will be available in next week’s edition of this publication.
