Photos for Dec. 30, 2020

This dashing dwelling on Sawyer Street in East Tawas not only boasts an expansive collection of familiar Christmas characters – such as the Grinch – but the spectacle is also coordinated to music as the lights flash in sync with the holiday tunes.

The Iosco County branch of Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (DHS) held a drive-thru event at the East Tawas venue, on Dec. 10. “Every year, we have a foster care Christmas for our foster children, our foster parents and our volunteers,” said Karen Hayes, foster care licensing specialist. She notes that the occasion usually features a group meal, gift giveaways and visits with Santa Claus but, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, those from DHS had to get a little creative in 2020. “So, we decided to do a drive-thru Christmas,” Hayes said of the festivities – which still included plenty of presents, music and an appearance by St. Nick. Pictured iabove are firefighter Karri Haglund, left, and ETFD Lieutenant Mike Haire. They also brought along one of the ETFD trucks to help illuminate the site. As for the gifts, Hayes said these were provided to DHS through Operation Good Cheer. Other entities chipped in also, including the Tawas Bay Fraternal Order of Eagles; Hale United Methodist Church; Holy Family Church, East Tawas; and St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Hale.
