TAWAS CITY – Friday turned into a busy day of wrestling for Tawas Area junior Lukas Herrick at the Division 3 individual finals. It turned into a medal winning day as well, as he battled his way through five matches to come in sixth place in the 215 weight class at the Wings Event Center in Kalamazoo.
“It was a great day for him,” head coach Chris Jagelewski said. “Winning by decision the first match he was able to get the jitters out and focus on the next match.”
After topping Ethan Schmid of Belding in the opening round, he followed with a tech fall victory over Masen Joppich of Yale.
In the semi-finals he lost to Ryan Osterland of Algonac in a 7-2 decision and he finished the day with a loss in the consolation semi-finals in a 9-6 decision to Eddie Olson of Richmond and lost the fifth place bout against Brandon Goodman of Portland via pin.
“The second match was also a booster for him,” Jagelewski said. “Heading into the third match we knew the competition was going to get better all day and it did. For Lukas to place sixth was a great day for us. It was super exciting to see him place and now he knows what it is going to take to move to the next level. I can’t thank his teammates, and the coaching staff enough for all the help this season.”
