W-P’s Russell Wilson locks on his opponent during last week’s North Star League meet at Oscoda.

WHITTEMORE – There’s still a long ways to go when it comes to deciding the North Star League wrestling championship. Whittemore-Prescott put itself in good early position, however, as they Cardinals won a pair of league duals at Oscoda on Wednesday.

“It is a great start to open up with two wins in the conference,” head coach Russ Wilson said. “I thought the kids did what they had to do to win for the team.”

The Cardinals opened with a win over Ogemaw Heights, 42-27 and followed that with a narrow 42-39 win over Oscoda.

“We wrestled really good on the night,” Wilson said.

Picking up two wins on the night were Adrien Fragoso, Dillan Parent, Kyle Fenner and Dakota Gagnon. James Morrison and Aaron Cloum were both 1-0 and splitting their matches were Devan Nader, Josh Reckling, Jesse Allen, Russell Wilson and Ronnie Boggs.

W-P (2-0 NSL) hosts Onaway and Mio tonight (Wednesday) for two more league duals. The Cardinals also head to Mio on Wednesday, Jan. 22.
