WEST BRANCH – Those from the Michigan State Police (MSP) West Branch Post officially began operating from their new location, at 2021 Fox Run, on July 12. The former post, situated at 496 E. Houghton Ave. in West Branch, will be vacated by the MSP.
The new building, at the intersection of M-55 and Fox Run, is approximately one mile east of the previous post location.
Representatives note that the phone number – 989-345-0956 – will remain the same, as will the lobby hours, which are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. The new physical and mailing address is: Michigan State Police, West Branch Post, 2021 Fox Run, West Branch, MI 48661.
MSP First Lieutenant Christopher Luty is the commander of the West Branch Post, which serves the counties of Iosco, Arenac, Gladwin and Ogemaw. He shared that the details are still being worked out, but the MSP is planning an open house for Sept. 18, which will allow members of the community to tour the new facility.
As the date draws closer, more information will be printed in a future edition of this publication.
As for the reason behind the move, Luty explained that the former West Branch Post building was constructed in the late 1930s, and was originally designed to house about five troopers. Currently, there are approximately 45 personnel assigned to the post.
He stated that numerous attempts have been made, over several years, to remodel and reconfigure the structure. However, the building is outdated, insufficient, and the land constraints at the former site made it impossible to expand.
The new home of the MSP West Branch Post has been constructed by a private contractor, under a lease agreement, Luty adds.
