BATTLE OF THE BADGES
BATTLE OF THE BADGES – In a friendly competition which also raised funds for a good cause, local firefighters and EMS workers took on the Michigan State Police (MSP) in the inaugural Battle of the Badges event on Feb. 26. Held at the Tawas Bay Ice Arena in Tawas City – as seen in these images from Photography by Jay Samuels – all proceeds from the hockey game benefitted the Iosco County Victims Advocate. The MSP came out on top in a 12-4 win, but the other responders will have a chance at redemption, as there are plans to make this an annual event. Along with coaches Jen Bruning and Staci Moe, the fire department/EMS members who took part in the 2023 occasion, were Nick Moore, Christian Botos, Angela Piechowski, John Jensen, Cale Wiltse, Leah Gingerich, Marty Brummeler, Zach Foust, Derek Hopkins, Ray Bruning, Jacob Barnes, Michael Haire and Joe Rettell. Contestants from the MSP, were Gabe Johnston, Josh Stinson, Josh Mayer, Robbie Clink, Ryan Young, Jerry Soboleski, Clayton O’Neil, Kyle Rettell and Mel Rettell.

LIONS VS FIREFIGHTERS
LIONS VS FIREFIGHTERS – The Iosco County Firefighters Association continued an annual tradition on Feb. 25, by again hosting several Detroit Lions Legends in a game of basketball. The 2023 fundraising event was held at Tawas Area High School, and featured participants from the East Tawas, Burleigh-Reno-Whittemore and Tawas City fire departments. The Lions football alumni who took part are also seen above, in this image from Photography by Jay Samuels, and consisted of Cory Schlesinger, Brock Gutierrez, Herman Moore, George Jamison, Scott “Tiptoe” Conover and Rob Rubick. The firefighters who got in on this year’s game, were Jeff Seyfried, Aaron Hazen, Max Miller, Staci Moe, Terry Yates and Nathan Abbott. Also helping out were Pam Walt of the East Tawas Fire Department (ETFD), Tawas Area Schools Teacher Chris Jagelewski and Tawas City Fire Department Lieutenant Don Hanson. ETFD Chief Bill Deckett shared that the light-hearted game was fun for both the teams and the audience. “Children picked from the stands were given the chance to ‘help’ in the game by shooting a basket, sometimes with the help of the Lions,” he stated. Proceeds raised during the event, which also included a 50/50 raffle, remain local and help fund training/materials for the various fire departments in Iosco County.
