ELKS AWARDS
ELKS AWARDS – Tawas Area Elks No. 2525 recently held their Awards Banquet at the Elks Lodge. Ron Quinkert, Exalted Ruler, hosted the event with the award ceremony first, followed by a steak dinner. Awards were presented to, from left, David Conn, Officer of the Year; Stephen Ferguson, Outstanding Service Commendation; Richard K. Otto, Elk of the Year; James Nelkie, Elks Distinguished Citizenship Award; and Neil Hackborn, Outstanding Service Commendation. Missing from photo is David Schantz, who was awarded the Grand Exalted Ruler’s Award Pin for excellence in membership procurement.

25-YEAR RECOGNITION
25-YEAR RECOGNITION – Tawas City Assistant Fire Chief Jeff Seyfried, right, was honored recently for his 25 years of service to the department. An award was presented to him at the fire station on May 20, by Chief Steve Masich, left, for which the firefighters and their families were also in attendance to view the presentation. Masich remarked that Seyfried is still very active and extremely dedicated to serving the Tawas City coverage area.

TAFT SCHOLARSHIPS
AWARD SCHOLARSHIPS – Tawas Area Federation of Teachers awarded its annual scholarships to two graduating Tawas Area High School seniors. This year’s recipients are Juliette Johnson, left, and Jeslyn LaJoice, right. Juliette and Jeslyn will each receive $1000 towards their college expenses. Juliette will be attending the University of Michigan to pursue a degree in neuroscience. Jeslyn will be attending Central Michigan University and is considering a major in secondary education.

HALE VETS WITH KIDS
SHOWING APPRECIATION – American Legion Post 422 and Auxiliary honored the principal, teachers and students at Hale Elementary School on May 25. In each grade, first through sixth, the students were given a small American flag to show our appreciation for thinking of our veterans in rest homes throughout the year. The principal and teachers each receive a certificate of appreciation. Pictured above are the students in the first grade class with, from left, back row: Melissa Bloomquist, first grade teacher; Marlene Polishak, auxiliary chaplain; Charles Carroll, post adjutant; Doug Walter, post commander; Julie Neville, auxiliary president; Principal Mike Bowman; and teacher Jordan Mason.
